    The best of friends
By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun
HOLLYWOOD -- Forget strangers, Breckin Meyer believes in the kindness of friends.

It was his elementary school chum Drew Barrymore who helped him get the agent who kick-started his career.

Alicia Silverstone remembered him from their days at Beverly Hills High School when she was tossing out suggestions for supporting roles in Clueless.

Ryan Phillippe played matchmaker for Meyer and screenwriter Deborah Kaplan, who Meyer married last October. Kaplan's credits include: The Flintstones in Viva Las Vegas, A Very Brady Sequel, Can't Hardly Wait and Josie and the Pussycats. Meyer's films include The Craft, Can't Hardly Wait, 54, Road Trip and Rat Race.

"I met Deborah at a party at Ryan's house in 1995. He was leaving L.A. to film White Squall and a bunch of us guys threw him a big party," recalls Meyer who plays Meg Ryan's brother in Kate & Leopold.

"I was immediately smitten with her. She was so smart and beautiful. She later told me her first impression was that I was a cute, dopey guy but a bit greasy. I couldn't stop talking about her, so Ryan drove me to her house the next day on his way to the airport. Now that's real friendship.

"On our third date I brought her chocolate chip ice cream. She said that was the turning point for her."

Meyer's TV series Inside Schwartz has not been renewed. "We did 13 episodes. I wished we'd been renewed because I think in the last couple of shows we finally hit our stride, but networks don't nurse shows like they used to."

Meyer says he'd never met Ryan before they were cast in Kate & Leopold, but recalls "within days Meg and I had this brother and sister thing going full steam."

"I'd leave crank calls on her cellphone usually changing her call times. I'd use different accents but after the third time she realized it was me."
